Nice to Know When Getting Married on Bornholm

Planning your wedding on Bornholm should feel simple, welcoming, and stress-free.

Whether you are travelling from abroad or already staying on the island, we are here to help guide you through the practical steps before your ceremony. Below you will find useful information about booking your wedding, legal requirements for non-Danish citizens, ceremony times, witnesses, locations, and what to expect on the day itself. We recommend reading through all sections carefully before contacting us, so we can help make your wedding experience on Bornholm as smooth and memorable as possible.

Non-Danish citizens must obtain a Certificate of Marital Status from the Danish Agency of Family Law in order to marry in Denmark.

When applying for the certificate, please also pre-book a wedding date by contacting us at wedding@brk.dk or by phone at +45 56 92 00 00.

The number of weddings is currently very high, and we do not offer cancellation slots. Currently the waiting time for a wedding ceremony is 3 months.

We therefore encourage you to pre-book your wedding date before applying through the Agency of Family Law.

Please let us know which date(s) would suit you and send us your full names for the booking.

We perform wedding ceremonies at the Town Hall (Landemærket) at the following times:

  • Tuesdays between 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
  • Thursdays between 1:30 PM – 5:00 PM
  • Fridays between 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Yes. At the moment, we cannot provide witnesses, so you must bring 2 yourselves.

Wedding ceremonies typically take place in the Marriage Ceremony Room next to the Municipal Council Chamber at Landemærket 26, 3700 Rønne, on the island of Bornholm. Bornholm can be reached by ferry or plane.

By arrangement — and for an additional fee — ceremonies can also be held outside the Town Hall. Please contact us for further information.

The municipality has appointed marriage registrars who conduct the ceremonies.

Please let us know:

  • Whether you will exchange rings
  • Whether you will exchange personal vows
  • The names and addresses of your 2 witnesses

The civil wedding ceremony itself is short, but 30 minutes are allocated for each couple.

The marriage registrar will usually give a short speech, you will both say “yes” to marrying each other, and then the marriage documents are signed before you receive your marriage certificate. The certificate is multi-lingual and in Danish, English, French, German and Spanish.

No. Only The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark may provide your original marriage certificate. Their office is located in Copenhagen. For more information visit their website.
